James Youl was born in New South Wales in 1810, and was the son of a pastoralist who moved to Tasmania in 1819.

He was responsible for the introduction of salmon and trout ova to the southern hemisphere when in 1864, after many failed attempts and much experimentation and study in to salmonoid biology, he was part of an expedition which successfully transported ova from England to the salmon ponds in Plenty. In recognition of these efforts he was made CMG in 1874, and was subsequently knighted in 1891.
