This small town is situated 45 kilometres from Devonport, and has a connection with the Cole Family, who started their supermarket empire from the humble beginnings of a General Store in Wilmot. George Cole founded G.J. Coles & Co., and his very first store which was operated here can still be seen.

Wilmot Dam, built in the early 1960s as part of the Mersey-Forth Power Scheme, lies nearby the town, but it is only accessible via a road privately owned by the Hydro Electricity Commission. The dam is on Lake Gairdner, and a viewing platform still exists on-site to see both sides of the structure. It is quite imposing, at just over 33 metres high and around 135 metres in length.

Down another private Hydro Electricity Commission road not far from Wilmot, you will find Lake Cethana (aboriginal for 'hair') and the Wilmot Power Station. This Dam is almost twice the size of the Wilmot Dam, and the scenery in the area is far more impressive.

Mount Roland is a vision in the distance from Wilmot. The mountain was named for Captain Rolland, who explored the area in 1823. No documentation exists explaining the spelling of the name, but it is assumed that at some point in time late last century the official version was accepted with the single 'l'. Mount Roland is a haunt of local artists and photographers, as the mountain assumes a variety of different colours, dependant on the weather and the light, and it is considered somewhat of a challenge to capture the mountain in its different moods.

Enjoy several lookouts which are situated on the road into the town, and which provide wonderful views of the imposing Mt Roland and Lake Barrington. Fishing and boating can be enjoyed at the Lake, and scenic camping and picnic facilities are available on site. Bushwalking through the stands of mature exotic trees proves an enjoyable way to get the most out of a visit to Wilmot.
