Victoria River, Northern Territory : Main Article
The town of Victoria River is located on the Victoria Highway, abut 200 kilometres from Katherine and 80 kilometres from Timber Creek. The Victoria River itself was found by Captain J.C. Wickham from the Beagle in 1839, and was named after the then Queen of England.
The town is located right on the river, and the crossing and gorge are an impressive sight. The town pales into insignificance against the splendour of the sandstone cliffs and mountains behind it. The roadhouse - The Wayside Inn - is set in some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the northern Territory.
Victoria River has good basic facilities, including a general store, bar, dining room, takeaway food, and a shaded picnic and barbecue area. It also caters for fuel requirements and minor mechanical repairs.
Victoria River lies within the boundary of the Gregory National Park, and a trip along the river by boat is a memorable way to experience the sights of the park.
Fishing in the river is also good, and barramundi and bream are the prime catches. But be careful of the crocodiles - both salties and freshwater crocs are prevalent in the area, so swimming is discouraged, and boaters should beware !
