Ulverstone is a busy town on the north coast of Tasmania, 21 kilometres from Devonport and located in the middle of a rich, fertile, agricultural area on the Leven River estuary. One of the first settlers in the area was a farmer named James Fenton, who had a farm by the Forth River in 1840.

Soon timber getters had moved in to supply the market in Melbourne with palings. A town was officially established in 1852, and the auctioning of blocks of land began in 1856. The first axemen's competition was held in Ulverstone in the beginning of the 1870s, the first in all of Australia.

Ulverstone was proclaimed a town in 1888, and two years later the railway arrived at the settlement. One of Australia's first female members of the House of Representatives (1943), and cabinet minister (1949), Dame Enid Lyons was born here in 1897.

The town is a popular resort for powerboating, sailing and surfing as it overlooks some of Tasmania's finest beaches. Plenty of high standard accommodation facilities await the visitor to Ulverstone.
