The Nut, Tasmania : Main Article
View Source Page History Page Locked
from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

The main attraction in Stanley is The Nut State Reserve. The formation was originally named Circular Head by Bass and Flinders in 1798.

The Nut is a spectacular outcrop of rock that is 150 metres high, and an isthmus just over 6 kilometres in length joins it to the mainland. The formation is actually a 10 million year old lava plug - evidence of the volcanoes that were in the northern area of Tasmania at that time.

A walking track to the summit commences from the Post Office, and the return trip takes about 45 minutes. There is also a chair lift that operates to the top, taking about 5 minutes for the return journey.
