Territory Wildlife Park, Northern Territory : Main Article
The park is 400 hectares in size.
The park is on the Cox Peninsula Road, 65 km south of Darwin and is ideal for a one day excursion. The attractions of the Territory Wildlife Park are located around a four kilometre link road. To reach them either walk, catch the shuttle train, or do a little of both. As you leave the main station the first exhibit is the Eagle Flight Deck where you can see the magnificent White-bellied Sea Eagle and other birds of prey in full flight at 10.00 am and 3 pm daily.
From here take a short walk to the popular Kangaroos and Friends enclosure, where you can visit wallabies, kangaroos and emus. The animal care centre is located here and provides the rare opportunity to see keepers tending orphaned, injured or newborn animals. Talks are held at 11.00 am daily.
The following enclosures are called the Foreign Invaders and are home to some of the feral animal species introduced to Australia. The destructive habits of these introduced species have a huge impact on the Territory's natural environment. From here continue along the circuit and visit the Bird Hide on Goose Lagoon or meet with the Camels and Dingoes.
The Aquarium with its huge walk-through tunnel provides an excellent view of barramundi, turtles, stingray and many other aquatic species, which are hand fed daily at 12 noon. A Saltwater Crocodile is also on show, with spectacular underwater viewing.
The next exhibit is highly popular and should not be missed. Enjoy a leisurely walk past 12 habitat-based Aviaries which present grasslands, monsoon forest, wet woodland, billabongs and mangrove and their feathered inhabitants. A huge Walk-through Aviary follows and enables you to encounter Pied Herons, Red-winged Parrots, Green Pygmy Geese, Torres Strait Imperial-Pigeons and many other species.
Continue along the track and enter the lush Monsoon Forest, where a raised boardwalk meanders through the trees. Bird species are fed daily at 1.30 pm at the next exhibit, Wader Lagoon. The Lagoon becomes a pool of thrashing wings and foaming waters as the Pelicans, Magpie Geese, Black-necked Storks, Egrets, Glossy Ibis and the Territory's famous Brolgas vie for a place in the food queue.
The Arthropod and Reptile exhibit features snakes, lizards, spiders and insects. A series of landscaped display areas will enable close observation of creatures normally viewed at a distance, or perhaps meet them personally at the daily 2.00 pm talk.
The final exhibit on the circuit road is the captivating Nocturnal House. Some of the Territory's major habitats including tropical woodland, escarpment, desert and wetlands are re-created here.
Many creatures which are often difficult to see in the wild, such as the Bilby, Water Rats, Barn Owls and Ghost Bats are seen as day turns to night and they become more active in the stimulated moonlight. Stay for the 'Bat Chat' at 2.30 pm daily.
As change is on-going at the Territory Wildlife Park, every visit should provide a new experience.
School tours can be booked by arrangement.
The Territory Wildlife Park is open from 8.30 am - 4.00 pm (gates close at 6.00 pm). It is open all year round except for Christmas Day. Admission charges apply.
