Tathra was first seen by Europeans in 1797 when the survivors of the shipwrecked "Sydney Cove" passed through the area on their way to Port Jackson for assistance. In 1859, a farmer by the name of Daniel Gowing began shipping dairy produce from Tathra to Sydney, and this activity led to a road being constructed from Bega to the port of Tathra in 1860. By 1862 Gowing had constructed the first store, post office and the first wharf at the current site. The town enjoyed a bustling cargo trade up until 1954, when the wharf ceased to operate.

Historic Sites

A trip to the historic town of Tathra on the coast should include visits to the restored Tathra Wharf, constructed in 1862, and Tathra Head which was originally used as a storage dump for coal being unloaded from ships. Tathra Hotel , built in 1888, is the only original hotel left in the town. Other places of interest include the post office, the Harbourmaster Building and several shops of historic value.

Natural Attractions

There are many popular natural attractions in the area, including Tathra Beach, the National Parks that border the town, the Bournda State Recreation Area to the South and the Mimosa Rocks National Park to the North. Kianinny Bay has a launching ramp for one of the best access points to the ocean for boats and yachts. Mogareeka Inlet is at the northern end of Tathra beach and is perfect for canoeing and waterskiing.
