Unlike the rest of Australia, Tasmania has no deserts, and no huge stretching flat plains. It is an island of mountains and rivers, and a temperate climate with frequent heavy rains - all of which have combined to provide Tasmania with some of Australia's most magnificent wilderness areas. More than 40% of the island is still under forest cover, and even where there has been logging forest skylines remain, and waterways remain lined by trees.

Tasmania has more of its total area set aside for National Parks than any other state in Australia, and its scenery preservation legislation was the first enacted in the country. Rugged parts of the State with bush, rivers, and mountains make Tasmania an ideal place for bushwalking. As Tasmania's topography, and therefore its fauna, varies greatly, visitors can experience a range of environments from primitive wilderness with mountains and eucalypt forests to wildflowers, great forests and ski slopes. The island also has a profusion of birds, wildlife and oceanlife.
