The Maritime Museum of Tasmania is a community museum run by volunteers and located in Secheron House, Battery Point, in the city of Hobart. The Museum displays a unique collection of paintings, photographs, models, relics, whaling implements and other artefacts depicting Tasmania's colourful shipping history from the early explorers and the first settlement in 1804, through the bawdy whaling days of the last century, to the present day.

There is strong emphasis on Hobart's own maritime history of sailing ships, steamships, whalers, cargo ships, passenger ships, ferries and yachts; including recent history of such vessels as the Blythe Star and Lake Illawarra.

Founded in 1974, the Maritime Museum is now located in Secheron House. Classified by the National Trust and the National Heritage Commission, Secheron was built in 1831 and is considered to be one of the earliest and finest examples of Georgian architecture in Hobart.

With its lavish use of cedar and the wide verandah overlooking the Derwent River, Secheron itself provides a fascinating glimpse of a bygone era.

The Museum is open every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is via 13 Clarke Avenue or Hampden Road/Colville Street. Limited parking is available.
