The Manor dates back to the year 1830 when it was constructed by George Armitage. As the family expanded and the land was subdivided amongst the ten children, the five hundred acres proved to be an insufficient amount of land to satisfy the family's needs. They therefore built 'Como' at Prahan. It was then bought by the Swans who had operated as publicans in Hobart. Thereafter the manor became known as the News Inn.

Amongst the history of the manor is a tale that the legendary Martin Cash, the bushranger, allegedly held up the inn but did not find the 500 pounds that was hidden there.

The Manor underwent restoration in the 1970s, and in the 1980s the current owners, the Rayners, also carried out some restorations. As a result Milford has retained many of its wonderful original features, with many fine examples to be seen of the Georgian architecture.

The Manor is now a craft shop with the beautiful products being created mostly by the owners. There are tableware, toys, flower arrangements, kitchen accessories and fabulous rainforest timber products. There is also a great selection of knitwear, folk art, confectionary, jams, framed prints - and lots more besides. It is open every day.

You will find the Manor on the Midlands Highway in Bagdad, Route 1, Tel : (002) 68 6149.
