Moorilla estate winery and vineyard, one of Tasmania's premier tourist attractions, is located just 10 kilometres north of Hobart on a peninsula in the Derwent River.

The first vines were planted in 1958 by the Alcorso family. The textile entrepreneur, Claudio Alcorso was the man behind the founding of the vineyard. There was a wine industry as early as 1803 in Tasmania, however it actually disappeared some time in the 1860s, hence the significance of Claudio Alcorso's steps to reignite the industry in Tasmania. The name Moorilla is an Aboriginal one which means 'a stone by the water', and the very distinctive trademark of Moorilla which appears on every label symbolises the continuity of life.

Julian Alcorso and his wife Keryn are continuing the family tradition - expanding attractions to include a vineyard restaurant (voted number one in the Tasmanian Tourism Awards), cellar door wine tasting centre and winery tours - all available 7 days a week.

A new jetty means Moorilla is now accessible by cruise boats, which leave Brooke Street Pier in the heart of Hobart. Moorilla is also a popular venue for vineyard concerts and private functions.

With Moorilla's award-winning table wines and picturesque setting, it is a must for any visitor to the State.

  • Vineyard Restaurant open daily for lunch from 11.30am
  • Moorilla shop - souvenirs, gourmet Tasmanian food products, morning and afternoon teas, wine tastings and tours - open daily 9am to 5pm.
