The Galley Museum is one man's tribute to his industry and to the rugged riches of the West Coast. Mr Eric Thomas established an early historical museum in Queenstown with exhibits dating from 1878.
There are in excess of 1000 photographs displayed in 8 rooms. All have been collected by Mr Thomas and a great amount of detail is typed under each photo. Most are dated prior to 1940. The photos cover the history of the West Coast, from the establishment of Mt Bischoff at Waratah to the development of Queenstown and Strahan.
There are also items of household equipment and personal effects in use during the early days of the West Coast. There are many interesting old documents, silver, watches, clocks, jewellery and a magnificent collection of kerosene lamps and ornamental glass chimneys, medallions and china ware all displayed in 10 first floor rooms. One collection is of the Royal Family, from Queen Victoria to the present day. The collections are continually being updated.
The Museum was sold to the Queenstown Council and is now run by a volunteer committee. The Museum is well lit and heated. A small admission fee is charged. Inspection times are as follows:
