The first point that should be mentioned is that an arboretum is a botanical tree garden. The Tasmanian Arboretum is a 47 hectare botanical garden of trees set in beautiful countryside at Eugenana, 10 kilometres south of Devonport on Tasmania's North West Coast.

The Arboretum has been developed by an association, Tasmanian Arboretum Inc founded in 1984. The land was obtained as a bicentennial project and development has been undertaken by voluntary workers supported by sponsors, Friends and Members of the Arboretum.

Trees are planted in collections based on their geographical origins. These include a comprehensive collection of Tasmanian native trees and ancient trees descended from those which grew in Gondwanaland some 80 million years ago. There are five nature trails with guide notes for teachers of visiting schools.

The Melrose Creek joins the Don River on site and provides water for a lake with islands, weirs and bridges. The lake is home to grebes, wild duck, swans, brown trout and platypus. Fishing is available without charge.

The car park adjoins the picnic area which provides barbecues, tables and seats. There are toilets with provision for wheelchair access. A kiosk providing light refreshment and literature is open at weekends and the Education Centre carrying a succession of displays is open on Sundays.

The Arboretum is open every day of the year, 9am until sundown. There is no charge for admission but donations are invited. The caretaker can be contacted on (004) 27 2690.
