The South Alligator River is located within the world heritage listed park, the Kakadu National Park. Poor Captain Phillip Parker King clearly indicated his lack of knowledge in relation to these creatures, for had he correctly identified the animals in the river, he would have in fact named it Crocodile River.

He came across the East, South and West Alligator Rivers in 1818. Uranium was discovered along a stretch of the river back in 1954. There is a camping area along the river to the south west of Jabiru which will give you the perfect opportunity to overnight in the midst of all of the natural wonders that the park has to offer.

Nearby you will come across Mamukala, which is an area of wetlands along the South Alligator floodplain. There are stark contrasts between the winter and summer periods here. In winter it takes on the appearance of a dried out piece of land, which could never have any life. Remarkably in the summer it is transformed into something quite different. A mass of green grass appears and flocks of geese take over. The South Alligator is well known for its excellent fishing, in particular for barramundi.
