from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Snug is located 24 kilometres south of Hobart, near the towns of Kettering and Margate. The name came about as a result of the town providing "snug" anchorage for ships and boats in the area. Snug's main attraction is the Channel Historical and Folk Museum, which has a comprehensive account of the lives of the pioneers who settled in the district during the early days of the colony.

The last surviving Aboriginals were relocated from Flinders Island to Oyster Cove in 1874, and the last full-blooded Aboriginal, Truganini(PEP), died in 1876 with the request that her ashes be strewn in Snug. However her remains were held by the Tasmanian Museum until 1976, when she was finally laid to rest here.

Snug was proclaimed a town in 1908, and was the site of Australia's only carbide works in 1917 at nearby Electrona. The town was decimated by bushfires in 1967 which resulted in the deaths of 11 people. Stone cut from the quarry at Snug was used in the construction of the Melbourne Post Office.

Visitors to Snug can enjoy the sandy Conningham beach, and scenic walking trails through the Snug Falls Track Area.
