(1760 - 1837)

James Ruse was a pioneer farmer who had arrived in Sydney in 1788 as a convict on the first fleet. A year later he had been granted permission by Governor Arthur Phillip to occupy a portion of land near Parramatta, which was called Experiment Farm, and was the recipient of Australia's first land grant in 1793.
