Renner Springs, Northern Territory : Main Article
Renner Springs is located along the Stuart Highway 160 kilometres north of Tennant Creek. The actual springs are quite near to the town, but the town itself uses bore water.
The roadhouse is in fact an old army hut, transported here in 1949 from the Banka Banka Station where it once housed soldiers during World War II.
A combination of wetter climate and the springs themselves have resulted in lush vegetation in the area. It is a treat to see all this green in the desert.
Nearby to Renner Springs, you will find Attack Creek Historical Reserve. This was the scene of some confrontation in the last century, when John McDouall Stuart was forced to retreat during one of his attempts at crossing the continent from south to north. The Warramungu Aborigines resented his presence in their area, forcing him to retrace his steps.
Also nearby is Lubra Lookout (Lubra is aboriginal for woman). Legend has it that hundreds of years ago the Renner Springs area was a meeting place for hundreds of different aboriginal people, and that the lookout was used by the local woman to advise of the arrival of the visitors. Today the lookout still affords views over the surrounding plains.
Renner Springs has quite good tourist facilities, including accommodation, a roadhouse, fuel and basic repairs, and souvenirs. Phone (089) 644 505 for more information.
