This is one of the most important tin mines in Tasmania, although the first discovery in the region was gold in 1891. Ringnose Nicholson discovered an extensive deposit of tin at the Ring River in the same year. The tin deposits were worked until 1922 when methods to extract deeper ore were uneconomical.

By 1936, tin extraction had started again and in the 1950s extensive new deposits of the metal were found, thus ensuring the area's survival. Mining activities are most obvious in this area, and the town once known as North Dundas has few amenities as most of the mine workers and their families live in neighbouring Zeehan.
