from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Rapid Creek is a suburb of Darwin. The government granted a total of 320 acres of land for a mission there in the last century. The Jesuits set up in 1883. By 1885 Rapid Creek had a school. It was hoped by the missionaries that the local Aboriginal people, the Larrakeeyah, would abandon their nomadic ways, but this was not as easy as they had hoped it would be.

By 1891, the mission was closed down. It had been the first mission to have established so far north. There is a colourful market held here every week, on Sundays from 8 am until 2 pm. The highlight of these markets is the vast selection of different foods you can treat yourself to, with the strong Asian influence a positive force for those who enjoy things culinary.
