from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Railton is located 23 kilometres from Devonport in the north of Tasmania, and is best known as being the home of the Goliath Portland Cement Company, one of the biggest industries in the State.

J.M. Dooley first marked the site of the town in 1853. The township was declared in the early 1850s, but it developed slowly until 1914 when the railway arrived. The cement company began operations in the year 1930, and has become one of Tasmania's major industries.

Several scenic drives begin in Railton and encompass beautiful forests and rural countryside. The town of Devonport is only a short drive away. Bowls, tennis and squash facilities are available to visitors in the town.

The Goliath Portland Cement Works can also be visited by appointment, between 10am and 3pm daily.
