from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Port Latta is 32 kilometres from Smithton in the north western corner of Tasmania, and is the administrative, off shore loading and pelletising centre of the main ore traffic from the Savage River area. The crushed ore is pumped through an 85 kilometre pipeline to Port Latta where it is processed and loaded onto huge carrier ships from Japan.

Tours of this facility are available by prior arrangement. Tours depart every Friday at 2pm from the Security Gate at the mine complex. If visitors wish to tour the mill sections they must wear correct footwear and slacks. Children under 12 years will not be allowed into the mill complex.

Nearby to Port Latta is the Peggs Beach Coastal Reserve, which takes in a total area of 218 hectares. There are some great beaches around here, ideal for a safe and refreshing dip in the ocean. You can also camp in the area.
