Pontville, Tasmania : Main Article

from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Pontville is located near Brighton in southern Tasmania. The town was originally established in 1830 as a staging post and garrison town. At one point Pontville was considered for the role of capital city for the state, but it was passed over in favour of Hobart.

Early industry in the area centred around the sandstone quarries. Stone from the quarries was used in a number of key Tasmanian buildings in the 1800s, and some of the original buildings - including St Mark's Church of England in Pontville - still stand as a testament to the early architecture and building techniques.

Attractions such as the Bonorong Wildlife Centre are close by to Pontville.
