from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

This is an Aboriginal settlement which is located some 240 kilometres west of Alice Springs. It was established by the Australian Government in the 1950s, as a means to reduce the pressure on the settlement at Haasts Bluff.

It is in this community that Aboriginal dreamings were first painted on canvas in Central Australia. Indeed, some of the work by the community can be found in a shop, Warumpi Arts, in Alice Springs. Warumpi Arts is a Community Council initiated organisation. The idea behind it was to provide the community with its own shop where it could sell its work with profits being retained by the community.

Papunya provides no tourist facilities other than a fuel pump which is open Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings only.
