This is a small settlement at the gateway to the Mount Field National Park and Russell Falls in southern central Tasmania. The town is located 73 kilometres north west of Hobart, on the road to Strathgordon, and is visited by thousands of people who wish to explore the National Park each year

The town is the gateway to the Mount Field National Park, and to Mount Field itself. The main attraction for visitors to the park is the Russell Falls, which have proven to be the second most popular tourist attraction in the state - second only to the Port Arthur Historic Site.

A number of walking tracks encompass fantastic scenery and native fauna, all ideal subjects for nature study and photography. Sealed pathways and trails are available for wheelchair users. During the winter months Mt Field National Park becomes one of southern Tasmania's main ski areas, with ample downhill and cross country courses.
