The Northern Territory is quite unique in more ways than one. Its colonial past has been quite different to that of other states. It is physically a harsh landscape which has made development and settlement problematic. As a region it continues to resist attempts to tame the land. Its northern coastal areas are lush in vegetation, but the remainder of the Territory is covered by clay pan deserts and sand dunes. Rivers are confined to the coastal regions and there is normally no rainfall between May and September. Indeed, what is without doubt one of Australia's most stark tracks of land, is certainly quite isolated from other States and a very unique place to visit.

Today mining and tourism are the region's leading industries, many visitors flocking north to experience the great outback and to be amazed by the Territory's many spectacular natural wonders. These wonders include Kakadu National Park, and one of Australia's most widely recognised natural icons - Ayers Rock, or the Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park as it is known by its Aboriginal name.
