from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Mount Nelson is located in Hobart, and is the site of an historic signal station which used to convey messages across the harbour to the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur. This signal station dates back to the year 1811. Its signal mast became a part of a chain of semaphore stations which linked Hobart to Port Arthur.

For over a century until 1969 it was used as an observation and communications post by the Hobart Marine Board. Today the Chief Signalman's cottage has been converted into a licensed restaurant and gift shop. It is open seven days a week for lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and private functions.
