from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Minjilang is located on Croker Island, off the northern coast of Arnhem Land with the Bowen Strait separating the mainland from the island. It is surrounded by sparkling sea water, fabulous beaches and an abundance of wildlife.

The town was built on the shores of Mission Bay and the two main groups who possess the land are the Iwadja Aboriginal people in the south and the Marrgu in the north. Between the years 1941 and 1967 the Methodist Overseas Mission ran a settlement there for half castes. During the war they were evacuated but they returned in 1946. It finally closed in 1967 and the children who had been at it were sent to Darwin. It has since become an Aboriginal Reserve.
