Elizabeth Macarthur : Main Article
(1766 - 1850)
Elizabeth (nee Veale) was born in England in 1766, and received her education there before moving to Sydney in 1790 with her husband John Macarthur, a member of the New South Wales Corps(PEP) whom she had married 2 years previously. In 1793 the Macarthurs were granted 100 acres at Parramatta which was to be Elizabeth's home for the rest of her days.
It was Elizabeth who managed and ran her husband's sheep breeding estates during his absences from 1801 to 1805, and from 1809 to 1817, and also carried out experiments in the breeding of sheep for fine wool.
She died at Watsons Bay in February 1850.
