The Sydney Town hall is the focus of the civic life in the city, providing a meeting place and administrative centre for Council, and a major venue for concerts, conferences, meetings, school speech days and balls. The building is one of Australia's most significant High Victorian structures with most of its interior and exterior detail intact.

The architecture of the building was influenced by construction which was going on in Paris under Napoleon III during the mid 1800s, and the building of the Leeds and Halifax Town Halls in England. The site of the Town Hall was originally a cemetery, indeed it was one of Sydney's earliest cemeteries, which was subsequently moved to Botany.

Building commenced with the Civic Offices and the vestibule in 1866, and the various other features, such as the Grand Stair, the Clock Tower and the Centennial Hall were all added in the following 2 decades. At later stages, in the early part of this century, a 'bird cage' and the steps and porch which are present now, were added.
