Melbourne continues to be a glowing metropolis. Gracious trams rattling along its wide, open streets, dramatic bridges over the Yarra River, tree lined streets and a variety of architectural styles enliven the city. Much of Melbourne's early heritage is visible in its modern streets, with a number of heritage buildings providing visitors and locals with an insight into Melbourne's history. The mansions of Werribee Park and Como House, as well as Rippon Lea - another of Melbourne's beautifully ornate houses - are enjoyed by many visitors. Governor La Trobe's Cottage in the Domain Gardens and the Old Melbourne Gaol are other reminders of Melbourne's early history.

Away from the city centre, the culture of Victoria's 1850 gold rush era has been recreated at Sovereign Hill, north west of Melbourne. The township is a replica of the gold mining settlements that occupied the area during the last century, and includes working displays of mining operations, stores and one of the famous Cobb & Co coaches.
