from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

This town has been classified by the National Trust, and is located 56 kilometres north of Launceston. The town is characterised by an engaging mix of important historic buildings and a modern maritime coastal resort area. The historic George Town is only 5 kilometres away.

Museums and Historic Sites

The lighthouse constructed in 1888 overlooks the majestic Tamar River, and the Pilot Station established in 1805 is the oldest such station still operating in Australia. The station houses a maritime museum which documents the strong links of the area to the sea, and a Tea Room. Mr Gunn's Castle and the restored semaphore mast are other sites of notable historic interest.

Natural Attractions

Low Head has two main beaches which are perfect for swimming, surfing and sunbathing - East Beach on the Bass Strait and the more secluded Lagoon Bay on the river. There is also a beautiful coastal walk from the lighthouse to a remote beach, where penguins come ashore at dusk. Picnic areas and camping sites are available near both beaches. Boat launching facilities are available at the Pilot Station.
