from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Laverton is located over 100 kilometres east of Leonora and is close to the settlement of Mount Margaret in central WA. The town was first settled following the discovery of gold in the area in 1896. The town subsequently thrived and became a bustling mining centre declining only when the surface gold was exhausted.

The town experienced a revival in it's fortunes in the 1970s when nickel was discovered at nearby Windarra.

Natural Attractions

Billy Goat Hill affords some spectacular views of the town and the surrounding area. Picnics can be enjoyed at Don Leahy Park.

Mt Windarra Nickel Mine is not open for tours but visitors can observe the mine workings from the summit of Mt Windarra.

Other Attractions

Laverton and the surrounding area is rich in mining history and many of the towns which were viable settlements during the hey day of mining are now deserted. Places such as Gladiator, Burtville, Just In Time and Heffernans can be visited by those interested in getting to know a bit more about the history of those who worked in such places.
