Lake Eildon in Goulburn River Country in central Victoria was formed as a result of the damming of the Goulburn River. Goulburn River Country , known as the food bowl of Victoria is bordered by Mansfield in the foot hills of the high country of the Great Dividing Range, Kilmore to the south and extends west to Rushworth and to Kyabram in the north. The Lake itself offers superb sport, fishing, swimming, water skiing and sailing in clear waters in and area that also provides magnificent mountain views. The surrounding town boasts great beauty and helpful, warm and lasting hospitality.
The Goulburn River with its incredible beauty is over 580km in length and Lake Eildon is Victoria's largest water storage holding six times as much water as Sydney Harbour. The Lake district is Victoria's most popular inland boating , fishing and water sports areas and offers a number of activities and attractions
Natural Attractions
One of the most relaxing and spectacular ways to view the Lake Eildon district is to take a houseboat on the Lake . Cruising the tranquil waters, there are a number of beautiful sights to enjoy as a well as a range of activities including fishing , swimming and jetskiing.
On land there are a number of accommodation options to suite all budgets and styles including caravan parks and five star hotels and the dry land activities are no less enjoyable. There are a number of options to explore including hiking and bushwalking in Fraser National Park, bird watching, visiting fisheries and hatcheries, horseriding and talking a tour of parklands and historic buildings in the nearby township of Alexandra.
Snobs Creek Hatchery one of Eildon's key attractions replenishes Victoria's rivers and lakes with Brown and Rainbow Trout, Chinook Salmon, Murray Cod and Perch. The Hatchery also has an impressive aquarium display, a Visitor's Centre where visitors can learn more about Australia's native fish, see films and other interesting displays. At the Centre visitors can also take a tour over the hatchery and can tickle trout, feed the fish and see the enormous Snobs Creek Hatchery's pet Murray Cod.
Nearby Alexandra is the civic centre of the Eildon district, a charming hilly township of beautiful parklands and great history. There are a number of fascinating historic attractions to explore in Alexandra including a number of interesting historic buildings, the Timber Tramway and Museum which showcases memorabilia from Victoria's goldrush and the rich history of the steam train era, alive today with steam train rides.
