from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Lajamanu, originally known as Hooker Creek, is situated about 100 kilometres south of Kalkaringi in the Tanami Desert.

Earlier this century there were clashes between the Gurindji aboriginal people, owners of the area of land, and the Walpiri people. At the time the Walpiri lived to the south of Lajamanu, but in the wake of the clashes, they were the dominant tribe, and the Gurindji moved northwards towards Kalkaringi.

Today, Lajamanu is an aboriginal settlement, providing only transit services for passing travellers. Permits are required for the purchase of fuel here.
