from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Kingston is situated 11 kilometres south of Hobart, and is the administrative centre of the municipality of Kingborough. Robert Brown, a Scottish Botanist after whom the Brown River was named, first explored this part of Tasmania in 1802. In 1835 the Proctors Road linked Kingston to Hobart.

Kingston's beautiful beaches made it very popular with tourists at the end of the last century, and it was also found to be a popular destination for Dutch migrants after World War II. There is still a substantial Dutch community in the area, who continue to celebrate the traditions of the Netherlands. Today Kingston has become a residential suburb of Hobart.

Natural Attractions

A scenic drive from Kingston incorporating Blackmans Bay, Tinderbox and Howden affords visitors spectacular views of Bruny Island, Storm Bay and Droughty Point from various lookout posts along the route. A reserve located on Blackman's Bay has a small blowhole which can provide some spectacular sights - especially during storm times.

Other Attractions

The Federal Government Antarctic Research Headquarters are based in Kingston, and on weekdays the centre is open to visitors, and shows exhibitions about their research and work in the Antarctic.

Sports facilities for visitor use include squash courts and basketball courts, tennis courts, a golf course, bowling green and boating areas.

Why not take the time to visit the Hythe Gallery which is to be found at 248 Summerleas Road, phone (002) 29 2588. It is open from 10am until 5pm, or else by appointment, and is closed on Wednesdays and in the month of July.
