Kempton, Tasmania : Main Article
Kempton is a Classified Historic Town which was founded in the early 1800s, under the name of 'Green Ponds'. It served as a coach staging post for travellers from Hobart in the south, en route to the north of the state, or to the mainland.
The first market place for produce was established in the town in 1828, followed by a mill and brewery. In 1840 the town was renamed 'Kemp Town', for Anthony Fenn Kemp who owned a local property. The town is characterised by its multitude of Georgian buildings, churches and historic cemeteries.
Historic sites
Pick up a copy of "Historic Township of Kempton" from the Council Chambers, then stroll around the town and view the amazing Georgian buildings that line the streets.
Highlights include St Mary's Church, which was constructed in 1841, and the Congregational Church built a year earlier in 1840.
See Dysart House, which was built in 1845, and which at one time served as the Commercial Inn. The Wilmot Arms constructed in 1844 still operates today, serving cool beer and warm welcomes.
Other Attractions
Visit the many arts and crafts shops in the area and observe master craftsmen at work; cabinet making, egg carving and woodturning. There are many antique shops awaiting exploration by visitors in the hope of finding a hidden treasure.
Dine in the high class restaurants in Kempton and enjoy sumptuous game dinners and locally produced wines, or treat yourself to a rich Devonshire Tea in any of the cafes scattered throughout the town.
