Kalkaringi (also known as Kalkarindji and Kalkarinji) is on the Buchanan Highway between Katherine and Halls Creek.

Kalkaringi was formerly known as Wave Hill, and the Wave Hill Cattle Station near the town is one of the largest stations in Australia, covering a total of 12,500 square kilometres. Wave Hill Station was established in 1883 by Buchanan and the Gordon brothers.

In 1966 the local Aborigines, the Gurundji, left their jobs as stockmen on the station as a protest against the poor conditions they were forced to endure. As a result of this, a claim was made for the land around the station on behalf of the aboriginal people. This triggered similar claims by other Aboriginal groups around the country, and the beginning of the Aboriginal Rights Movement.

In 1975, Prime Minister Gough Whitlam granted a lease of 3200 square kilometres of the station - an area known as Wattie Creek - to the Gurundju people. This was the land considered most sacred, as it was the original site of Gurundji Dreaming. Finally, in 1986, total ownership of the land reverted to the aborigines.

Today Wattie Creek is known by the aboriginal name of Dagaragu, and it is an aboriginal settlement about 10 kilometres from Kalkaringi.

Kalkaringi is the starting point for the Victoria River, as it makes its way to the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. This great river was discovered by the explorer Gregory on one of his inland treks, and a boat named 'The Beagle' was the first to travel along the river's waters.

The town itself is basically a service centre for Dagaragu and the Wave Hill Cattle Station. One of the main points of interest in the town is Frank's Bar and Grill. The 'building' has no walls, and is the weekend destination for many locals, looking for a cold drink and a few laughs.

The Kalkaringi Service Station provides most of the town's facilities - accommodation, a supermarket and service station. It is open 7 days a week, and caters for tourists.
