John Hunter : Main Article
(1737 - 1821)
John Hunter was born in Leith in 1737 and joined the navy in 1754. After a time of varied tours of duty he was appointed second captain of the first fleet bound for the New South Wales colony, on HMS Sirius. He would eventually circumnavigate the globe during the years 1788-89 in order to provide provisions for the infant settlement.
In 1794 he was appointed Governor of the colony, and served in this capacity until 1800. During this time he was unable to curb the actions of the dubious New South Wales Corps or the illicit rum trade.
He was also criticised by the Home Government for his policy of allowing a large number of convicts to work for farmers who would in turn sell their crops to the government.
In his favour, he encouraged the exploration of the State by George Bass, Matthew Flinders and Shortland. He was recalled to England in 1800, and despite being promoted to rear and vice admiral he saw no more active service. John Hunter died in 1821.
