(1797 - 1873)

Hume was born in Australia in 1797, and discovered Lake Bathurst and the Goulburn Plains in 1818 before leading another expedition to explore the Yass Plains in 1822. In 1824 he led an expedition with Hovell from Gunning to what they thought was Westernport. They had in fact discovered the Murray River, and had arrived at Port Phillip Bay in , rather than Westernport. Hume also accompanied Sturt on his 1828 expedition into the bush.

In 1829 he was granted land in the Yass district and he settled there, becoming a magistrate. In 1860 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He died in 1873.
