Howard Springs, Northern Territory : Main Article
Howard Springs is about 20 kilometres form Darwin, and has a population of approximately 4000 people. It is almost a satellite town of Darwin - one of the many that are growing on the outskirts of the city.
The town was named for Frederick Howard, an officer in the Royal Navy who spent a great part of his career mapping the north coast of Australia.
All major facilities can be found in Howard Springs. The Howard Springs Tavern is quite typical of many hotels in the north - there is indoor/outdoor dining, bistro style meals, and live entertainment. There is also a seafood restaurant in the complex, called the Manor Inn.
Howard Springs offers basic tourist services, including a supermarket, newsagency, post office, and takeaway food. there is also fuel 24 hours a day nearby.
The Howard Springs Nature Park makes a perfect day out amidst natural beauty, with a rainforest setting and plenty of ideal spots for picnics. Covering a total of 1000 hectares, there is a pool with water from a spring for those wishing to enjoy a refreshing swim, and for nature enthusiasts there are all sorts of birds, wallabies, goannas and turtles. There is a marked walking track through the rainforest, where an assortment of flora and fauna can be found. Facilities in the park include barbecues, picnic area, toilets and a kiosk. Pets are not allowed.
Gunn Point is approximately 50 kilometres to the north of Howard Springs, along Gunn Point Road. Here, fishing, boating and camping can be enjoyed in a very remote and peaceful atmosphere. There is a boat ramp - but beware the crocodiles ! Fishing is good in this part of the world, and barramundi and even barracuda are often found in these waters.
