Howard Springs Nature Park, Northern Territory : Main Article
The park is 1009 hectares in size.
This Park has a spring-fed swimming pool surrounded by monsoon rainforest. A picnic area and open woodland provide plenty to do, including swimming, bushwalking, wildlife observation and photography. The first European to discover and name the Howard River was William Auld, and he did so in 1865.
A weir crossing the pool was constructed in the 1940s, when World War II troops swelled the local population and Howard Springs was required to supplement Darwin's water supply. Now the crossing allows comfortable viewing of many local fish species. Several large Barramundi may also be seen in the main pool, but fishing is not permitted.
A signposted trail will take you on a 45 minute walk throughout the forest. An enjoyable spot for a day trip, Howard Springs Nature Park is just off the Stuart Highway 35 km south of Darwin. Sealed roads provide year around access. Open 8 am - 8 pm.
