Hovell was born in 1786 and arrived in Sydney in 1813 to establish himself in business, and to occupy the land grant he was issued at Narellan.

He discovered the Burragorang Valley in 1823, and was part of the 1824 expedition from Gunning with Hamiton Hume. In taking more credit for the expedition's findings than he deserved, he created a bitterness between Hume and himself, which was to last for the rest of their lives. He died in 1875.
