Highfield House was built in 1835 for the Chief Agent of the Van Diemens Land Company(PEP), Edward Curr. The house was thought to have been designed by explorer Henry Hellyer who arrived in Stanley in 1826. When Edward Curr vacated the house in 1842 his successor at the Van Diemens Land Company(PEP), James Alexander Gibson, moved in and made some alterations to the property.

After severe financial problems, the company was forced to lease Highfield in 1856, and in 1914 it was eventually sold to a private family. In 1982, the Tasmanian state government purchased the house, and extensive restoration work was undertaken. Highfield is open for public inspection 7 days a week from 9am until 5pm.
