Hayes Creek is on the Stuart Highway, about 135 kilometres north of Katherine and 175 kilometres south of Darwin.

Hayes Creek is a service area for the campsites of the 200 men who are employed in a significant gold mining operation nearby. The Wayside Inn in the town has a bar, dining area, a general shop, a sub-post office and a picnic area. There is accommodation offered in motel style or demountable style buildings, and there is also a swimming pool for the guests to use. Phone (089) 782 430 for more details.

Entrance roads to The Douglas Hot Springs and the Butterfly Gorge Nature Reserve can be found about 5 kilometres north of Hayes Creek. The Daly River area is also nearby.
