from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Granton is located 18 kilometres north of Hobart, and was originally called South Bridgewater due to its proximity to the settlement of Bridgewater. Today Granton is a small town with an historic atmosphere.

The Old Watch House was constructed in 1838 with convict labour to guard the Derwent River causeway, which was built in 1830 by 200 convict workers. By 1850, 2 million tons of stone had been used in the construction of the causeway and the house. The House features the smallest single cell in Australia, 50 centimetres square and 2 metres high, as well as numerous punishment items and convict man-traps.
