Goulds Country, also known as Dumara, is located in the north eastern area of Tasmania, and owes its development to the discovery of tin in the region. In 1900 the town had a savings bank, hotel, post office, money order office, state school, two churches and a public hall. A small council held general sessions when needed. The population of about 400 people got their water supply from the creek, a tributary of the George River. A coach service linked the town to Scottsdale and St Helens.

Nearby Ansons Bay Sawmilling Company had built sawmills, and a 3 mile wooden tramway linked the sawmill to the jetty and loading facilities at Sloop Rock. Ansons Bay was a well loved fishing and holidaying resort.

Today the area is full of some of the most fertile farming land in Tasmania, and is also a part of the most extensive system of forests in the state. It is very scenic to drive through, but justice can only really be done to the area by discovering it on foot and taking advantage of the marvellous views first hand.
