Glen Helen is some 131 kilometres away from Alice Springs. It is to be found along Namatjira Drive on the Finke River. There is much debate concerning the history of Glen Helen, particularly the origin of its name. Some believe that it was Ernest Giles who named it in 1874, others say it was Fred Raggart at a later date when he ran the station, and yet others claim that it was Major R.E. Warburton.

However, the strongest case is for William Grant who is believed to have named it after his granddaughter in the latter years of the last century. The only remnants of the original homestead which exist today, is a pile of old building materials left in a heap at Ormiston Creek, the original site of the homestead.

Aboriginal mythology states that the original beings who emerged at the time of the Dreamtime made their appearance at the Glen Helen waterhole.

The Glen Helen Gorge is closeby, where the Finke River manages to make its way between the narrow sandstone walls on the start of its trip south to the Simpson Desert. It is part of the Glen Helen National Park and the facilities of the Glen Helen Lodge are there for you to avail of during your visit in the area. There certainly are plenty of stunning places to visit in the .
