John Gilbert : Main Article
(1810 - 1845)
Gilbert arrived in Australia in 1838 as chief collector for the zoologist John Gould. Following the completion of extensive sampling in Van Diemens Land, he was sent to the Swan River settlement where he made notes on the birdlife and mammals living in the environment.
Having learnt of John Gould's departure to England, he left for said country in 1841. He was back in Western Australia after an offer of work was made, and within 17 months had collected a vast array of plants, reptiles and birds, many of which had not been seen before. He was speared to death by Aborigines in 1845.
