from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Gemtree is located along the Plenty Highway, some 94 kilometres to the east, off the Stuart Highway. It is close to both the Strangeways and Harts Ranges. The Harts Ranges was at one time a hive of mining activity and today it is a great place for those who are keen on fossicking. Whilst visiting the Ranges you will notice some of the old stone cottages where the miners used to live.

You can always try your hand at a spot of fossicking. You can hire the necessary equipment, and who knows, you may strike it lucky. The local caravan park, the Gemtree has gemcutters at work and you can watch them turn stones into beautiful gems. There is also a large display of local gems here for you to view.
