At the beginning of this century, a Lutheran Mission was established here on the Finke River. It is to be found to the east of Kulgera, some 149 kilometres. From here the Mac Clark Conservation Reserve is within easy enough access. Finke is part of the annual Finke Desert Race which sees competitors racing from Alice Springs to Finke, a total of 240 kilometres and then racing back to Alice Springs the next day, when the race resumes. It takes place on the long weekend of the Queen's Birthday.

Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve is set in 340 hectares of land and is north west of Finke. Early travellers crossing the desolate ridges of the Finke River used this prominent column of red and yellow sandstone as a landmark on their journeys through Central Australia.

The Pillar's soft sandstone holds the important historic inscriptions of early explorers and pioneers. Heavy fines apply to anyone defacing this national monument. The Park is accessible to high clearance 4WD vehicles only.
